Contracts between Nicaragua and China boost the development of the ENESOLAR 3 Solar Project.
Nicaragua and a Chinese state-owned company signed contracts for the construction of a photovoltaic power plant through the ENESOLAR 3 Solar Project, with the aim of ensuring more sustainable development for Nicaraguans.
The plant will be developed by the Nicaraguan Water and Sewer Company (ENACAL) with a power of 70 megawatts and an investment of more than 83 million dollars, financed by China.
In this way, the agreements were signed between the Government of Nicaragua and the Chinese state-owned company CCCC (China Communications and Construction Corporation), including the Commercial Contract and the Credit Facility Contract for the project.
Laureano Ortega Murillo, residential advisor for the Promotion of Investments, Trade and International Cooperation, explained that the initiative includes the construction of a photovoltaic power plant in the department of Masaya, southeast of Managua.
«This project has multiple objectives: First, to strengthen the pumping systems of the Nicaraguan Water and Sewer Company (ENACAL), to improve the water and sanitation services provided to our people; second, to reduce energy rates through more efficient energy; third, to contribute to the sustainable development of our country through renewable energy,» added Ortega Murillo.
About the ENESOLAR Project Agreement
The Minister of Finance and Public Credit, Bruno Gallardo, representing the Government of Nicaragua, signed the Credit Facility Agreement, for a total of 502 million 316 thousand yuan, equivalent to 70 million 550 thousand dollars, destined to finance the project.
«With this project, we now have three solar energy projects with the Chinese company CCCC, with a total generation capacity of 200 megawatts, thus contributing to Nicaragua’s energy security and efficiency, and to the country’s sustainable development,» said the Presidential Advisor of Nicaragua.
«We know that electrical and energy development is an important basis for the well-being of a people every day; it is the driving force of a country’s social and economic development,» Xiaobing said. Zhao, representative of the Chinese company CCCC.
Commenting on the ENESOLAR 3 project, Zhao said: «This project will not only help to change the country’s generation matrix and increase the proportion of energy generated from renewable resources, but will also ensure a sustainable and stable supply of drinking water for the people of Nicaragua.»
Nicaragua and China collaborate on other projects
With the implementation of this new plant, Enacal aims to strengthen its management capacity and encourage resource savings through the use of renewable energy.
In parallel to this project, Nicaragua is executing other projects in collaboration with the same Chinese company, such as Enesolar 1 and Enesolar 2.

Salvador Mansell, Minister of Energy and Mines, said: «We are at 70% renewable sources, taking advantage of natural resources, we are talking about 70% of energy consumption in our country; that added to the electrical coverage at a national level. It is important for the company Enacal, because in this way it has the possibility of continuing to grow with the water supply, at a national level.»
