Nicaragua is consolidating two railway megaprojects that will link different cities in the Latin American nation, through the development of a memorandum of understanding with a state company from the People’s Republic of China.
The Vice President of Nicaragua, Rosario Murillo, confirmed the conversations that a high Nicaraguan delegation is holding in China, to finalize at least eight agreements for the construction of mega-projects.
“We are going to sign a memorandum for the studies, design and construction of a Managua-Masaya-Granada railway. We are also going to formulate the Managua-Corinto-Bluefields Railway Master Plan,” with the Chinese company CCECC, Murillo said.
Major road construction works
Likewise, the vice president detailed that the agreements are being worked on to carry out road works such as the expansion of the Guanacaste-Nandaime-Rivas and Rivas-Sapoa Highway, and for the Coastal Coastal Highway Project, Phase 2, with the Chinese state company, CSCEC.
Within the framework of the III Belt and Road Forum in China, the Nicaraguan delegation, led by the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI), has made progress in strategic negotiations with different state companies of the Asian giant.
Among the Nicaraguan representatives, there is also Tania Díaz, vice minister of the MTI; Amaru Ruiz, director of the Transport Regulatory Institute of the Municipality of Managua (IRTRAMMA); and the Nicaraguan ambassador to China, Michael Campbell.
CCECC, the Chinese counterpart in the development of railway agreements, is recognized as «a large-scale state-owned enterprise with Chinese national super grade qualification for railway project engineering and has been listed among the world’s top 225 international contractors», according to their website.

The Nicaraguan authorities also highlighted the signing of a contract with the Chinese company CAMC Engineering Co., Ltd, for the “Reconstruction, Expansion and Improvement of the Punta Huete International Airport”.

The Sandinista Government affirmed that the Nicaraguan delegation will also hold meetings with the Chinese companies Yutong and CSCEC with the objective of giving, respectively, continuity to the bus supply programs and the housing program in Nicaragua.
