Nicaragua registered new growth in the Monthly Economic Activity Index (IMAE), as revealed by the report published by the main banking entity of the Latin American nation.
In this sense, the report from the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN) specified that the economic performance corresponding to the month of December 2023 showed an interannual growth of 5.5%, compared to the 4.5% recorded the previous month.
Likewise, the Nicaraguan banking institution indicated that the accumulated variation during the January-December period also shows an increase of 4.8 percent, a figure that coincides with the average annual variation.
The seasonally adjusted analysis of the IMAE shows an increase of 1.0% compared to the previous month and 5.8 percent compared to December 2022.
On the other hand, in the trend-cycle series, the IMAE showed an increase of 0.3 percent compared to the previous month and 5.7 percent in relation to December 2022.
Growth in different areas
According to the BCN, the activities that have experienced the greatest growth include hotels and restaurants (19.1%), energy and water (10.2%), financial intermediation and related services (9.1%), commerce (8.5%), construction (8.1%), transportation and communications (7.6%), and mining and quarrying (6.7%).
In the primary sector, growth has been attributed to various factors, such as increased extraction in mining, an increase in livestock and agricultural production, and an increase in fishing and aquaculture.

In the services sector, all activities have shown growth, highlighting hotels and restaurants, energy and water, financial intermediation and related services, commerce, and transportation and communications.

In contrast, the manufacturing industry has seen a slight decline, of around 2.6%, although this has been mitigated by growth in the production of other products.
