An annual analysis of the most expensive and cheapest cities in the world detailed which locations in Latin America are included under that indicator in 2023, evaluating the purchasing power of a dollar in each city.

According to a study by The Economist newspaper, in Latin America, Mexico City stands out as the most expensive city. In this sense, the strengthening of the Mexican peso is highlighted as one of the strongest currencies among emerging markets, given the increases in interest rates and solid domestic investment.

The city of Aguascalientes, Mexico, has increased its costs and is positioned as one of the most expensive to live in Latin America.

This year’s report suggests that the three cities that have climbed further up the list, becoming more expensive, are in Latin America: Santiago de Queretaro and Aguascalientes in Mexico, along with the Costa Rican capital, San Jose.

The cheapest city in Latin America

On the other hand, despite estimates of annual inflation of 180% in Argentina, Buenos Aires is positioned as the cheapest city in the Latin American region.

In this sense, this is mainly attributed to the devaluation of the Argentine peso, which has allowed those with dollars to obtain significantly more pesos compared to the previous year.

Although the survey covers 173 major global cities, the global average of the newspaper’s analysis excludes kyiv (Ukraine) and Caracas (Venezuela).

Globally the study ranks Singapore as the most expensive city, mainly due to its high concentration of global millionaires, it has consistently maintained its position as the most expensive place to live in nine of the last 11 years.

Despite a 321% increase in its price basket in local currency compared to the previous year, Damascus, the capital of Syria, remains the cheapest city to live in the ranking.
