TikTok creators will be able to choose if they only want to reach over-18s when broadcasting via an impending update. The popular app revealed that the new features are designed to protect underage people from inappropriate content 18+.
The statement added: «We want our community to make the most of the opportunities LIVE can bring without compromising on safety. We believe these industry-leading updates can further protect the younger members of our community as they start and build their online presence.»
«In the coming weeks we plan to introduce a new way for creators to choose if they’d prefer to only reach an adult audience in their lives,» a statement from TikTok reads.
TikTok used comedy routines as an example of how to use the soon-to-be-available feature.
Currently, TikTokkers with at least 1,000 followers over the age of 16 can launch, but that will change on November 23.
From now on, users must be over 16 years of age to send direct private messages. Users over the age of 18 will be able to send virtual gifts or access monetization features. The app will remain available to users ages 13 and up.

TikTok is also updating the keyword filtering tool currently available for live streams, designed to allow creators to limit comments they deem inappropriate.
The update will prompt them to update their filters with suggested keywords. The 18+ live feature rolls out to users on October 19.
