President of China, Xi Jinping, met with Ma Ying-jeou, former representative of Taiwan.

The first time Xi and Ma met was in 2015 in Singapore, where they discussed political issues related to China and the Taiwan Strait.

The President of China, Xi Jinping, received the former representative of the Taiwan Strait, Ma Ying-jeou, in Beijing, who will stay for 11 days, in what constitutes the first meeting with a Taiwanese leader or former leader in the Chinese mainland.

During the meeting, the president of the Asian giant said that the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are all Chinese. “There are no knots that cannot be untied, no problems that cannot be discussed, and there is no force that can separate us.”

“The people on both sides of the Strait share the same lineage, the same culture and the same history, as well as the same responsibility for the nation and the same aspiration for the future,” Xi added, according to Xinhua.

He also urged young people on both sides of the Strait to be “more proud, confident and secure in their identity as Chinese people, work together for the long-term prosperity of the Chinese nation and continue to create new glory for the nation.”

In this regard, he called for efforts to protect the common home of the Chinese nation, cooperate mutually for the long-term well-being of China, foster a strong sense of community for and achieve the great rejuvenation of the nation.

For his part, the island’s former representative, Ma Ying-jeou, stressed that “the defense of the 1992 Consensus and the opposition to “Taiwan independence” are the common political basis for the peaceful development of relations between both sides of the Strait.

Furthermore, Ma added: “The people on both sides of the Strait belong to the same Chinese nation and should deepen exchanges and cooperation, jointly carry forward Chinese culture, improve the well-being of compatriots on both sides, and work together for rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”

China maintains that Taiwan is an integral part of its territory, in accordance with the “one China” political position promoted by the Asian country. Xi and Ma had not met since their meeting in Singapore in 2015.
