Nicaragua’s Co-President Rosario Murillo announced that the National Assembly is carrying out a consultation process with State institutions to draft a constitutional reform aimed at consolidating a fully sovereign electoral system.
She stated that the proposal responds to the need to strengthen revolutionary institutions and guarantee the peace, security and stability achieved by the Nicaraguan people.
During her message to families, the Nicaraguan Co-President emphasized that the country will continue holding elections, but under a model built upon national independence and free from the influence of external interests.
“Elections, yes, but they will be our own elections. And when we say ‘our own,’ we mean elections that belong to our blessed people—designed and organized from our national sovereignty and our national dignity—to choose the best Nicaraguans, a people defined by struggle and honor.»
She also explained that the initiative requested by Co-President Daniel Ortega includes the preparation of studies and technical documents, as well as consultations among the branches and institutions of the State, before it is officially presented.
In this context, Rosario Murillo endorsed the statements made by National Assembly President Gustavo Porras, who has said that the electoral reform does not respond to models promoted from abroad, but rather to the determination to improve a system defined by national interests.
