The Nicaraguan Armed Forces expressed their support for the consultation process on the Partial Reform of the Political Constitution during the session convened by the National Assembly.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Army, General Julio César Avilés Castillo, stated that the initiative is part of “a historic process to strengthen institutions, with the aim of guaranteeing the defense of peace, sovereignty, independence and the self-determination of our beloved homeland.”
During his remarks, Avilés thanked Parliament for the invitation to learn firsthand about the scope of the proposal and reiterated that the Army will continue fulfilling its responsibilities in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
“Making a significant contribution and devoting all our efforts to guaranteeing the best conditions of security, stability, tranquility and peace, which are necessary for the development and well-being of all Nicaraguans, particularly those most in need,” the military chief stated.
The Commander-in-Chief also conveyed the institutional support of the General Command, the Military Council, the corps of generals, officers, soldiers and other members of the Armed Forces for the constitutional reforms.
“We undertake the commitment to always support and defend the right to be free and sovereign, to determine our own destiny without foreign interference,” he stated.
During the presentation of the initiative, Parliament President Gustavo Porras explained that the proposal includes extending the terms of appointment of the Commander-in-Chief of the Nicaraguan Army and the heads of the police forces.
