The member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) condemned the violation of Ecuador’s international law in the violent police assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where they arrested the former vice president, Jorge Glas, who was in asylum.
At the extraordinary virtual summit of heads of state of the Celac, convened by the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, and president of the regional body, reaffirmed that Ecuador violated Mexico’s sovereignty by aggressively breaking into its Embassy in Quito, so the fact was rejected and, at the same time, advocated an early resolution with the restoration of international law.
In this regard, Castro said that the action of the Ecuadorian government, sows – a nefarious precedent – for the execution of the international legal framework because it violates and ignores the provisions established to carry out diplomatic work.
Therefore, the Republic of Ecuador is invited to redirect the appropriate procedure of the asylum rules requested by former Vice President Jorge Glas, granting the safe conduct required for the United Mexican States. In this way, it would begin the normalization of relations between the two states, Castro stressed.
In addition, the Honduran President reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen CELAC as a space for peace, where disagreements between member countries are resolved through dialogue and peaceful path.

It also called it unacceptable for a Government of our region and our organization to act in this way by tarnishing the national sovereignty of another Latin American country, breaking international instruments on the historic right of asylum, in violation of international law in its entirety.
