The President of Nicaragua’s National Assembly, Gustavo Porras, stated that the country will determine and organize its own elections and that legal and constitutional reforms are being advanced to ensure stability, security, and peace for the Nicaraguan people.
«This is a sovereign legislative reform process aimed at ensuring elections by Nicaraguans and for Nicaraguans. Never again will elections serve the interests of imperialism, the United States, or those who act against our country,» he said in an interview with international media.
He stated that the future electoral and constitutional reforms will seek to ensure that decisions regarding elections respond exclusively to the will of the Nicaraguan people, without pressure or interference from external actors.
«Nicaragua’s history makes one thing clear: there will never again be elections in this country that allow imperialists or enemies of the people to return to power. That statement is unequivocal because the history of the Nicaraguan people has always been a history of resistance against empires,» the Nicaraguan official said.
Porras maintained that the country’s history demonstrates the effects of foreign intervention in different political processes and recalled that, in past decades, external powers directly influenced the organization of elections.
Reforms Will Strengthen Electoral Sovereignty
He also noted that the 1990 election was conditioned by the context of war and threats against the population. Therefore, he insisted that the new legal framework will seek to preserve peace, stability and national self-determination.
“The elections of the 1990s were the clearest example of a gun being pointed at the people’s heads. In other words, 1990 was not an electoral victory; in 1990, the Yankees put a gun to our heads and said: ‘If you vote for the Sandinista Front, we will continue the war.’”
He added that the constitutional reforms would be ratified in January 2027, “in accordance with what is mandated by the Nicaraguan Constitution.”
During the interview, the head of the Legislature also highlighted the relations between Nicaragua and the Russian Federation, describing them as a historic bond of solidarity and cooperation.
“We are brotherly peoples, and we are grateful to the Russian people.”
In this regard, he expressed the recognition of the Nicaraguan Government and people for the support received over the years and voiced confidence that this relationship will continue to strengthen the sovereign process being promoted by the country.
