The National Assembly’s Special Constitutional Committee continued its consultation process on the proposed partial reform of the Constitution with the Nicaraguan delegation to the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN).

«On behalf of all the members of Nicaragua’s delegation to the Central American Parliament, I would like to express our firm support for the proposed reform of the Constitution,» said Reverend Guillermo Daniel Ortega, Vice President of the Central American Parliament.

«We are convinced that these constitutional reforms and adjustments are necessary and important to strengthen the country’s institutions and ensure genuine, transparent, and credible electoral processes,» Ortega added.

During his presentation of the reform’s main pillars, National Assembly President Gustavo Porras explained that the proposal is built on three core principles: stability, security, and peace, which are regarded as essential conditions for achieving the central objective of the State reforms—advancing the fight against poverty.

He also noted that the initiative includes institutional adjustments aimed at strengthening the country’s institutions and ensuring the continuity of public policies.

Will There Be Elections in Nicaragua?

The reform preserves Nicaragua’s system of regular elections and extends the terms of popularly elected officials to seven years, while maintaining citizens’ right to choose their authorities through the ballot box.

It also introduces measures to strengthen the electoral system and establishes new provisions regarding eligibility for public office, in accordance with the constitutional principles of sovereignty, independence, and national self-determination.

The consultation with Nicaragua’s delegation to the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) marked the eighth session of the dialogue process led by the National Assembly to present the main components of the partial constitutional reform and the corresponding amendments to the Electoral Law.
